Interpack - ALBIS presents Active Packaging solutions and a new measurement method

Press Releases   •   May 09, 2017 11:17 GMT

Hamburg, April 11, 2017. ALBIS PLASTIC is presenting “Active Packaging” solutions for flexible film applications, such as bag-in-box (BIB) wine packaging, at this year’s Interpack trade fair (Hall 7, Level 1 / A08). “Our SHELFPLUS® O2 oxygen scavenger has made the jump from thermoforming to flexible films,” says Roland Schultz, Director Marketing Packaging. "The PE-based masterbatch is used in a laminable PE sealing film and helps improve product quality and shelf life, e.g., in bag-in-box applications for wine. In many markets, for example Scandinavia, it makes it much easier to replace metallized films.”

The combination of EVOH and SHELFPLUS® can replace metallization in packaging, providing equal or better shelf life while reducing the carbon footprint.

Adding SHELFPLUS® O2 to existing BIB films can delay oxidation of the filled product by up to 50%, depending on storage and filling conditions. “In other words, we can extend shelf life from six to nine month, which is indeed impressive, and represents our contribution to the Save Food Initiative. The scope of this improvement in practice will be determined through comparative filling tests,” Schultz adds.

How to measure oxygen absorption of active films

Prior to the Interpack, ALBIS worked with the Fraunhofer Institute in Freising to develop a simple method customers could use to measure films’ oxygen absorption themselves. ALBIS will be presenting the method and measurement equipment at its Interpack booth.

Plastic-based gas barrier as an alternative to metal

Besides BIB applications, SHELFPLUS® O2 can now also be used in stand-up pouches to improve product shelf life. The ever-growing discussion of package recycling was a contributing factor here as well. SHELFPLUS® O2 can provide significantly better oxygen protection when combined with EVOH or SiOx and AlOx coatings. “Of course, conventional stand-up pouches with aluminum gas barriers can be improved as well - especially if the package has a “spout” that reduces the gas barrier properties of the whole pack,” Schultz says.

ALBIS offers PP and PE based 50my ABA or ABC sample films in rolls containing SHELFPLUS® O2 so that customers can do laminating or lining experiments quickly and cost-effectively. The Reichenschwand-based (close to Nürnberg) company jura plast is even available to deliver commercial quantities.

Trends and developments for future applications

ALBIS is working with customers to develop other active batches as well, such as CO2 absorbers or “detectable masterbatches” for foodstuff films used between raw materials producers (fruit, oil, etc.) and food or cosmetics fillers. “We believe that food safety and extended shelf life are areas where we can score big with our products—now more than ever, in fact. Because our masterbatch solutions can be incorporated into packaging, rather than being added separately (like sachets, for example), they represent improvements in terms of package recyclability. Recycling and ‘design for recycling’ are subjects we want to continue contributing towards,” Schultz says.

Chinaplas 2017 – ALBIS focuses on regional expansion, automotive and E&E industries

Press Releases   •   May 09, 2017 11:16 GMT

Hamburg, April 6, 2017. ALBIS PLASTIC is exhibiting at Chinaplas 2017 in Guangzhou – Booth 10.2E71. This year, in addition to its established range of locally produced compounds and renowned distribution products, ALBIS is also presenting a “Green Selection” of products based on both renewable and high-quality recycled raw materials. Taking centre stage is the company’s own ALTECH® ECO line, which is based on high quality recycled raw materials offering ecological sustainability at near-to-prime performance and quality. “We increasingly see that our range of highly technical and sophisticated solutions is resonating more and more with the Chinese market. This indicates a clear trend towards high quality materials in all segments relevant to us,” says Hans Rukes, Managing Director of ALBIS PLASTIC Asia Pacific.

As the most important plastics industry event in Asia, Chinaplas is an ideal forum for introducing customers and partners to relevant solutions and example applications. “This year’s Chinaplas will be the first where we present our ECO line, as we observe that demand for resource-conserving, high quality materials which contribute to sustainability goals is also increasing in China,” notes Silva de Lamboy, Director Business Line Recycling.

ALBIS is continuing to emphasize technical differentiation and competence within the Chinese market, flanking its own brand portfolio with distribution products from acclaimed international polymer manufacturers such as Covestro, Lanxess, Ineos Styrolution and LyondellBasell. Other portfolio highlight includes Tecnaro GmbH’s line of products based on the renewable raw material lignin. ALBIS’s selection of recycled products is primarily geared for customers involved in the automotive and E&E industries, two of its core segments.

Today, ALBIS is represented in a number of China’s core regions, and will be expanding its radius of activity further into Central China, especially to the Chonqing area, an important location for the afore-mentioned industrial sectors.

As one of the world’s leading suppliers of plastics solutions for lighting applications, ALBIS offers tailor-made products for the automotive and E&E industries. Its proven ALCOM® portfolio, which entails products for use in injection molding, was recently expanded to include ALCOM® LDX grades. These new light-diffusing compounds were developed for use in extruding profiles for linear LED light guides and lighting covers. ALCOM® LDX products are “ready-to-use” compounds with excellent light transmission and optimum scattering, ensuring homogenous illumination.

ALBIS has also added two new masterbatches to its own brand portfolio: ALPERFORM® Light Diffusion and ALPERFORM® Light Blocking. As well as being highly cost efficient, ALPERFORM® PC LD offers users a great deal of flexibility to adjust light transmission and scattering directly during processing. ALPERFORM® ABS LB, meanwhile, offers significantly increased light reflection and improved opacity, making it ideal for highly reflective and light-blocking LED light housings and reflectors.

ALBIS will continue pursuing its market strategy in the Chinese market. Even though weaker economic growth was projected for China in 2016, ALBIS enjoyed a very successful business year, increasing its market presence substantially in both distribution and own brand technical compounds.

“We see good growth opportunities for ourselves in 2017 here, in what is still a very dynamic market for us—and with overall market growth forecasted at around 6.5% for this year, we see great promise for further significant growth,” says Rukes.

In addition, ALBIS is working actively to expand its presence in the markets in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, South Korea, and Japan.

New licensing agreement for coloring of Purell® products

Press Releases   •   Mar 30, 2017 10:53 GMT

Hamburg, 30 March, 2017. ALBIS PLASTIC GmbH and LyondellBasell have signed a licensing agreement for coloring of Purell® materials. The new agreement allows ALBIS to expand the product range for use in medical devices, laboratory and diagnostic areas as well as pharmaceutical packaging.

As a long-time distribution partner of LyondellBasell, ALBIS sells polyolefin and polypropylene compounds in Europe. With the agreement to globally offer Purell® polyolefin materials colored to customer requirements, the two companies set a further milestone in their successful and long lasting partnership.

The Purell® range of polyolefins (polypropylene as well as high density and low density polyethylene grades) is the perfect material to address the specific requirements of healthcare applications: strict commitment of a consistent formulation, change management procedures for unavoidable formulation changes, compliance with biocompatibility requirements, e.g. fulfilment of European as well as Unites States Pharmacopeia requirements.

"We are looking forward to LyondellBasell being our further licensing partner for the development and production of colored healthcare materials, and to expanding our range of licensed coloring. The new agreement gives us the opportunity to better serve the continuing trend toward pre-colored materials. For our customers this step means a reduction in complexity", explains Mike Freudenstein, Director Marketing Healthcare at ALBIS PLASTIC.

Under the brand name Purell®, ALBIS develops customer-specific or tailor-made colors without changing the fundamental properties of the healthcare materials. "Components for medical products and pharmaceutical packaging that are made from our compounds not only impress with their functionality, but also their attractive appearance and safety-related properties. This includes, for example, the important color distinctions of operating parts or connections on medical devices or infusion aids in hospitals", says Freudenstein.

As well as many years of experience and close cooperation to leading color manufacturers, ALBIS also has modern machinery that is globally oriented to specific own internal standards.

Both small quantities and large volumes can be offered without the need to compromise or reduce quality.

Regular internal and external audits ensure a consistently high quality Standard.

ALBIS PLASTIC expands its ALFATER XL® portfolio with a series of new polyamide adhesion modified TPV grades

Press Releases   •   Oct 12, 2016 11:00 GMT

Hamburg, October 12, 2016. ALBIS PLASTIC GmbH is expanding its portfolio of thermoplastic elastomers by including polyamide adhesion modified ALFATER XL® compounds available in shore hardness A55, A70 and A85.

ALFATER XL® is a blend of a polypropylene matrix with a finely dispersed, fully cross-linked EPDM phase and belongs to the group of thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs). The material is resistant to weather, ozone, aqueous solutions, acids and alkaline media, and can be used in a wide temperature range (-40 °C to +130 °C). As its natural appearance is very light, the material can be easily colored – even with bright colors.

Numerous tests conducted together with the SKZ Würzburg have confirmed the excellent 2K adhesion to PA6 and PA66 of the new adhesion modified ALFATER XL® types. Peeling tests of ALFATER XL® with shore hardness A55 in accordance to VDI 2019 typically resulted in cohesive break of the ALFATER XL® TPV. This means that the adhesion to polyamide proved stronger than the inherent strength of the TPV. A further highlight is the good adhesion when using inserts (cold inlays).

The new ALFATER XL® types are perfectly suited for the manufacture of 'hard-soft' components in various sectors, such as the automotive and electric / electronic industries. In the automotive segment, thanks to its high temperature resistance, the material is also suitable for use in under the hood applications – e.g. seals, covers and cable ducts.

Given its low emission and low fogging properties the new ALFATER XL® series also meets the requirements for interior automotive parts and housing components.

ALBIS PLASTIC drives internationalization throughout Europe and America

Press Releases   •   Sep 28, 2016 11:00 GMT

  • New foreign subsidiaries in Italy and Mexico
  • Activities in the US: Foundation of ALBIS Barnet Polymers LLC joint venture, construction of new US plant for compounding of engineering plastics
  • Production capacities in Europe expanded

Hamburg, September 28, 2016. ALBIS PLASTIC GmbH, a Hamburg-based global specialist in the distribution and compounding of technical thermoplastics, will be exhibiting at K 2016, Hall 8b, Stand A61. The exhibit will focus on the company’s broad portfolio of products by well-known plastics manufacturers, in order to reflect its core business of distribution—and also in light of two special anniversaries. “2016 marks 50 years of close cooperation with Covestro and Lanxess,” explains Philip O. Krahn, CEO of ALBIS PLASTIC. “Both producers number among ALBIS’s strategic business partners—and not just for distribution, but also in the areas of license and toll compounding. It is a happy coincidence that K, the world’s leading plastics-industry trade fair, is also taking place this year, such that we can celebrate this historic milestone together here.” K itself is celebrating an anniversary as well: this year will be the twentieth such event. The plastics trade fair was held for the first time in 1952.

ALBIS uses K, the plastic industry’s most important show, as an opportunity to talk with customers and business partners about current and future projects, as well as additional potential areas of cooperation within the context of progressive internationalization. In this regard, the company’s goal is to continue expanding its distribution rights. As such, the company has expanded its collaboration with Ineos Styrolution in Bulgaria, and intends to intensify the relationship within other regions in which ALBIS is already active. Previously, in 2015, ALBIS expanded its partnership with Covestro in Bulgaria, while also building upon its cooperative work with Eastman in the Maghreb region and with Lucite in Switzerland.

“K is happening at the right time,” says Philip O. Krahn. “It’s the ideal industry event for us to meet with our partners and customers, and discuss current and future business. And now that ALBIS has its own sales office in Italy, I’m sure we have a number of future-oriented conversations ahead.”

The company is also sounding out additional potential activities and opportunities for collaboration, with a view to further intercontinental expansion.

In the Asia-Pacific region, in particular, ALBIS has established a broad distribution network over the past forty years, most recently through the steady expansion of its Southeast Asian network. “ALBIS sees and has the potential for success in continued expansion of its activities,” comments Krahn, who led the company’s Far East division until the end of June and is well familiar with that market.

ALBIS is also investing in North America. Besides opening a sales office in Mexico, primarily to supply the automotive market reliably, ALBIS has joined forces with William Barnet & Son, LLC, who specialize in the manufacture, recycling, and distribution of fibers, yarns, and plastics. On September 1, 2016, the two companies founded a joint venture, ALBIS Barnet Polymers LLC, in which ALBIS PLASTIC is the majority shareholder. The joint venture’s headquarters are in Duncan, South Carolina, in a region that is home to many customers that ALBIS already supplies in Europe.

ALBIS Barnet Polymers LLC will reclaim and process post-industrial raw materials, market them, and compound them into ALTECH® ECO products. Both companies are investing heavily in recycling technology, and in their range of sustainable, near to prime-quality recycled compound products.

ALBIS will also be constructing a plant for compounding engineering plastics on joint venture premises. The plant is scheduled to open during the second quarter of 2017. “This facility will increase our flexibility on site and improve our delivery capabilities within America even more,” says Frank Kriebisch, COO of ALBIS PLASTIC.

ALBIS PLASTIC GmbH will also be taking over Barnet Europe’s existing polymers business, which includes, in particular, production sites in Obernburg (Germany) and Humenné (Slovakia). Taking all of its business activities in the USA and Europe into account, ALBIS’s global production capacity will thus increase by 60,000 tons per year.

ALBIS will also continue to invest in its existing production sites in order to address needs resulting from previous and planned growth.

Anniversary – ALBIS PLASTIC and COVESTRO celebrate 50 years of successful partnership

Press Releases   •   Jul 01, 2016 11:00 GMT

Hamburg, July 1, 2016. During 2016 ALBIS PLASTIC GmbH and Covestro Deutschland AG are looking back on a successful 50 year partnership in plastics distribution. On May 1, 1966 a new contract was entered into which gave ALBIS access to a large part of the then Bayer portfolios of around 1,400 small customers in Germany. The agreement included the distribution of ABS, polycarbonate and polyamide. Just one year later the contract was extended - ALBIS established itself as a firm partner of Bayer and a reliable distributor for small and medium-sized companies in the German plastics processing industry. Over the intervening years the agreement rapidly gained momentum, expanding to include collaboration on international markets.

"Although I haven't personally witnessed the developments over the past 50 years, I can reflect on the last 20. And it's got the lot," recalls Edda Kröger, Senior Director Distribution Performance Polymers and head of Business Unit Distribution at ALBIS PLASTIC. "The sales regions that we have added in the last five years alone, places like Russia, Turkey or the Maghreb region, bear witness to the deep trust in our collaboration. Ultimately these markets are challenging fields with their own individual dynamics - and a strong partnership is really valued in those situations," says Kröger.

Philip O. Krahn, Chief Executive Officer of ALBIS PLASTIC, summarizes: "In three words: We are proud. In 2016 there is no end in sight for what we started in 1966. We are looking forward to many more years of working closely with Covestro - there are still things that we can achieve together. There won't just be new opportunities in the distribution sector, but also in license and toll compounding, which cover additional divisions to distribution and could happily expand even beyond the borders of Europe."

Covestro too have only positive things to say about the partnership: "Even in economically challenging times, ALBIS and Covestro have never taken their eyes off their common goals. Intensive collaboration based on integrity and trust hasn't just ensured commercial success but has also created sustainable added value for both companies and the customers. This makes us at Covestro optimistic about the future of this partnership," says Jürgen Raab, Sales Director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. And Achim Gustorf, Key Account Manager for Distribution, adds:"ALBIS is an excellent partner for Covestro because both companies place great importance on values such as customer orientation, reliability and being proactive. This shared understanding will also lead to us being able to provide our customers with innovative products and services in the future."
